So you now have a log on and a website allocation with freeola. The next plan is to decide what you are going to use as your theme. Most people choose themselves so they can show others what they like to do ect. I have choose this, with nice sites to link up to like gliding and drama. At this point it may pay to create a directory on your hard drive called web site.
In this directory should be a sub directory called htdocs. All web directories must go in htdocs.
In the htdocs directory I have created a sub folder called thumbnails. In here I keep all my images different pages have different sub directories to help me administrate all the files. Your web site must start with an INDEX.htm page. Freeloa do not like this file to be called anything different. This is classed as your home page. From the home page you can navigate the viewer to anywhere in the World Wide Web (WWW) or just around your little web site. In my home page I have added links to my brothers web site for example, so I can support his cause. I have also added a email address and a guest book. I can talk about the guest book and counters later when you have built the site To make my pages look good, I use tables and sub tables. In these tables i can add writing as well as have a pic to the side of the text. Adding a table is handy you can use this to separate the page down. I have used in this case a 3 column one row table to help me do this. There are many ways you can choose to lay out your page. Some web page soft ware like front page start off the layout to your choose. They also give you a basic preview of the layout which is helpful. I have also put some pictures on the home page but because I have used large pictures, this slows the page down when loading. My advise is to keep the pictures small I can talk about this in another page, making the pictures a smaller size. |
OK by now you should had done your page layout and have the theme idea. Now make sure it looks good. Play with the lay out. Save the page in the htdocs directory make sure the pictures are also in the thumbnails directory before you insert them into your page. If the file names are not the same on the server, the server will not be able to locate the files and the page/file or picture will be missing. When adding a picture to your table select insert image. Then choose the file, if it is already in your website directory, the locate then will be correct when on the website. Ok so your first page is done and you need to FTP (file transfer protocol) to freeloa server. First you must dial freeola up using their login number account name and pass word.
Once on go to your Internet browser, make a short cut to your desktop called FTP and add in the following in the URL box FTP://"your account name"@"your web address. Name it freeola ftp. Dont use the "" this is an example! This will take you straight to your web site htdocs directory on the server. If its your first time then delete the htdocs directory. (this is the only time you do this) Open explorer up copy the htdocs directory which is on you hard drive. copy this to the freeola server htdocs directory. this should copy all your files over including your pictures. Go to your Internet browser and test your . website and see if it works. If it does, you have created your first page and have uploaded it ok. Well done. Once you have uploaded your site do remember to debug it. There are always links of files that can get missed. Once you done this a few times you be able to say how easy it is to do. |
