This Is My Grandad taken some time
around 1935. My Grandad was in the Army for 281/2 years and he
claimed to have the best days of his life there. When I joined the
RAF I got in touch with my granfather as a family argument with my
dad and himself caused me to not see or hear from Grandad
In many letters that my grandad wrote to me he informs me how he
had a great respect for the RAF as he saw them smashing The
resistance for Army in North Africa at great expense for the RAF
My Grandad joined the Royal
Artillery on the 22nd November 1917 as a British war boy entry.
And retired just after the war in 1946 as a Lieut Quartermaster.
He was commissioned from 1st Class warrant officer R.S.M where he
was a surveyor and Battles Commander assistant.
As you may have worked out, he was in 2 World
wars. |

He fought on the North West frontier of India and in Southern
Ireland. My granfather serviced in all countries of the Middle East
during the last world war. He gained 8 medals. NW
frontier of India, Africa Star, galleon star, British war medal
1939-45 long services and good conduct medal, and defense medals. |
Like I said before my grandad and my father fell out with each
other. So I lost contact with grandad (be it right or wrong)
for a long time. I got his contact address from the family and
got in contact with my long lost grandad. We met up in Jan 86
in Waterloo station. I never seen a picture of him before but
when I saw him, I knew who he was from all those crowds. Weird!

We went around London that day and I gave him a bit of a
hard time for loosing touch and asked if he would write to my dad.
He did and they got back together for his last year of his
life. My respect for my dad for doing that for his father, as
it must have been hard for him to swallow his pride as he can be a
stubborn guy. |
I
wish I saw granddad more now when I look back of things. But I
have his letters which I treasure to this day.
To the right is my dad and I at my
cousins wedding in Petworth.. It was a nice day out and I
got quite drunk once I got out of my uniform.
